What Are You Training For? Size or Strength
Training for Strength or Training for Size, the two are not the same!
Growing muscle size is different to building strength, but people get this confused and train incorrectly.
Let’s be clear here, you want to build size and a physique which looks awesome, right?
In that case, strength is not your priority, although you will naturally get stronger and should make an effort to do so. However, doing 1 rep maxes, or 3 rep sets with crazy heavyweight isn’t the smartest way to build muscle.
– Muscle size comes mostly from sarcoplasmic swelling, this is best achieved with 8+ reps – using 8-12 rep ranges is the smartest way to guarantee you’re hitting this threshold.
– Ultra low rep sets are higher risk on the joints and don’t provide enough opportunity to create the level of muscle tension which promotes muscle swelling.
– Using very low rep ranges requires a more explosive type of exercise technique which means that there is less muscle tension, making this more specific to developing power than building size.
